The Widow and Her Coins in the Temple…and Jesus!
While Jesus and his disciples were teaching in the Temple, Jesus called them over for an important teaching moment. Jesus was watching a widow who is poor drop her two coins in the collection box.
Jesus could see the wider picture and knew that this widow gave her coins from her heart and not from her surplus. She had little in the line of possessions.
Yet she knew how rich she was because she had a God who loved her, gave her strength, mercy, compassion, and contentment. She wanted to say thank you for these wonderful gifts that she needed more than anything else and to stay faithful to the God who created her.
She gave this offering because it was a show of her gratefulness to a loving God. We have a God, we who loves us very much and knowing this, we can love this God back with hearts full of joy and gratefulness.
The widow who is poor gave back because she believed. She was grateful because she knew she could not live one day without God. No matter how poor she was materially, she would always be rich in the things that matter most. God’s strength helps her overcome her deficits.
She lives her life with honesty and integrity. She knows that with greed, corruption, and avarice there is never enough. She gives what she cannot afford because she knows in her heart that God loves her and always watches over her.
We can live our lives constantly striving for material wealth, which, no matter how much we have, will never be enough. But, like the widow who gives from a heart full of gratefulness, if give out of gratefulness to our God who loves us, our hearts and homes will be filled with joy.
